Dental Exams & Cleanings

What are Dental Exams & Cleanings?

Exams and cleanings can help to keep your smile healthy and strong. Cleanings allow our hygienist to clear away hardened plaque, known as tartar. We examine your teeth to spot minor issues before they are able to get worse. It’s a good idea to come into the office twice a year for these checkup visits.

Why might Dental Exams & Cleanings be needed?

Prevention is key when it comes to keeping your smile bright, healthy and full. Even with the very best brushing and flossing techniques at home, you still need to come in for a professional cleaning. Plaque that is allowed to harden turns into a white, chalky substance known as tartar. The only way to remove tartar safely is with a dental cleaning performed by a licensed dental hygienist. Exams are necessary for spotting issues and providing you with a comprehensive treatment plan.

Who is a candidate for Dental Exams & Cleanings?

Everyone is a good candidate for both exams and cleanings. In fact, even infants and toddlers can benefit from coming into the office for routine care. It’s never too late to take a proactive approach to your oral health. Even if it’s been years since your last dental appointment, we offer you the care you need in a judgement-free manner.

What happens during the appointment for Dental Exams & Cleanings?

The appointment begins by taking x-rays that allow us to see below the gum line and teeth. Our licensed hygienist will then perform a cleaning using special instruments known as scalers. For heavy buildup, we may use a sonic vibrating scaler. The teeth are then polished and flossed to a high shine. The doctor comes in and performs an exam looking for signs of decay, loose restorations and broken teeth. We even check your gum health and signs of oral cancer while you are in for this checkup visit.
