What are Dental Fillings?
A dental filling is a tooth-colored restoration that is used to replace areas of decay. If you have a cavity, the decay is removed and we will put a filling in its place. Most fillings can last for many years before needing complete replacement. Fillings help to fill in the areas that decay has been removed, preventing the decay from further compromising the tooth.
Why are Dental Fillings needed?
If you have a cavity, a filling will need to be placed. If the decay is able to get worse, it will eventually get down into the tooth and affect the pulp. Before this happens, we remove any apparent decay and place a filling. Composite resin fillings are designed to look like the rest of your natural tooth.
Who is a candidate for Dental Fillings?
To determine if you might need a filling, we will perform an examination. Areas that are decayed may appear dark, and a dental explorer may get stuck in it because it feels sticky and tacky rather than hard. Some cavities can only be found on a dental x-ray, especially if the area of decay is between the teeth. If you need a filling, it’s crucial that you have the work done as soon as possible to prevent the decay from getting worse.
What happens during the Dental Filling procedure?
The filling procedure starts with a local anesthetic that is used to numb one area of the mouth. The decay is then completely removed and the tiny hole is prepped for the filling. The composite resin filling is placed and cured with a bright light. The process is incredibly quick, and we can place multiple fillings at the same time. You can expect your composite resin filling to last for about a decade before it’ll need to be replaced. We can replace older fillings as they begin to crack or show signs of wear.
